Mom’s Beauty Advice We Should Take

My mom is full of advice….on everything.  Some of it I listen to, some of it I nod my head smiling, and some of it I play very deaf.  I will tell you, though, that the older I get, I listen to a lot more of it, and understand much more of what she’s talking about.  She’s a wise woman, as I’m sure your mother is too, so I thought we should look at all the beauty advice we’ve heard from our moms and listen to her tips.  My mom is gorgeous, so it’s always been an area I take her words to heart on!

Mom’s Beauty Advice that Works!

1.  Get to Bed Early

Holly Golighlty (my hero) got her beauty sleep

I love staying up late, I love being up when the house is quiet and I love late night TV.  The thing is, my mom was always pretty strict about bedtimes growing up, and I have found that she is right about one thing:  I look SO much better when I get sleep and I look HIDEOUS when I don’t, especially the older I get!  When I am tired my face is kind of…gray, and my eyes look old, and my hair is always a mess because the last thing I want to do while exhausted is my hair.  I drag and I look like I’m dragging.  Sleep has restorative benefits from a health perspective.  Collagen builds and repairs as we sleep, the connections in our brain repair, our skin moisturizes, and our overall health of the day gets set back to start.  Without the proper amount of sleep (6-8 hours minimum), your body cannot do all these internal and external repairs.  The oils don’t make it to your scalp and hair, your skin’s collagen remains broken and flat, and your whole body just isn’t back to a good point from the stress you put it through the day before.  So let’s think about having two nights without proper sleep, what about a week?  Or if you’re me, a lifetime!   We all know our bodies, for me eight hours is what I need and when I don’t get it, I show it.  So, get to bed, friends, your face will thank you tomorrow.

2.  Eat Your Vegetables

How yummy does this look??

Have you ever eaten fast food for like, a week, because you’re so busy?   Don’t you feel utterly repulsive afterward?  That would be me, in times of crazy schedules (which is always) and by day three or four of fast-food eating I am down, tired, sluggish, and frankly kind of ugly.  It’s the food!   Fruits and vegetables aren’t just things you should push on your children, you should push them on yourself too!  Antioxidants, vitamins, hydration–these words are all on every beauty product you can buy.  Um…they’re also inside every vegetable and fruit you can eat.  We’re trying to get antioxidants from a cream we rub on our faces, when the natural way is to just eat some berries.  Does anyone else see how silly that sounds?  Eat the good foods and see the results, I know it’s a no-brainer, but I forget sometimes, and I’m sure you do too.

3.  Wash Your Face Before Bed

You missed your lipstick,  pretty girl…and your eyebrow pencil…and your mascara

Ok, I am kind of psychotic about my facial cleansing routine.  I have uber-sensitive skin and I break out in rashes/pimples/hives/etc from the slightest change in routine.  Some people can try out new makeup, new face wash, new anything…I cannot.  So I would say that in the last twelve years I haven’t missed my nightly routine once.  I (vaguely) remember the night of my 21st birthday:  it’s 5 am and I’m not able to even stand, forcing my boyfriend at the time to get a washcloth and my face wash.  If I travel, I put my face wash in carry-on, because I can survive without clothes or shoes, but I will not leave my makeup on at night.  Now, having shown you what a lunatic I am, let’s say that this is a great habit to have!  You should never be sleeping with makeup on!  As stated above your face repairs at night, and clogging your pores up with gunk all night is just asking for a dull, troubled complexion.  You want great skin, it’s the cornerstone to looking great, and one way of getting it and keeping it, is having a nightly routine.  Cleanse, moisturize, toss on some retinoids, whatever works for you, but do it every night.  You’ll be happy you did later.

4.  Be Kind to Everyone

Miss England, Katrina Hodge, served her country first, deployed to Iraq, AND became a beauty queen.  Tell me what’s prettier than that!

My mom has always been big on manners and doing things for others, and you know what?  It makes her prettier.  It feels so good to smile at people and laugh with people and do nice things for others, and when you feel your best, you look your best.  So just take a moment and look at your activities for a week: are they all about you?   Change that up.  Do a few things for friends, families, your mother, the neighbor, a total stranger, and watch the transformation in the mirror.  Being beautiful isn’t all about what’s up front, real beauty comes from the center of your body and heads out.  Don’t we all know people that get prettier the more you know them?  It’s because their beauty is coming from the inside out, and it’s very real.  Right now, think of your grandmother–she’s beautiful isn’t she?  Grandmas have that inner beauty down.   So go be pretty in the verb sense: act in a beautiful nature.  That’s going to be my new slang: I’m going to do some pretty today.  (Let’s just hope that donating enough food bank cans will result in looking less tired on 4 hours sleep somehow…)

Thanks, Mom, I love you.

Newsflash: Kimberly Jarman Internship Now Accepting Applications!

We (probably) won’t ask you to sew, but this is what our workload feels like people, too much fabric, not enough hands!

Ok, the time has come, our little company has suddenly exploded into pictures and papers and brides and families and events coming out of our ears and…well…we need help!!  So let’s get down to business, people.  We want to be completly straightforward about what this internship entails, where it’s leading, and what you’ll get out of it, and if this sounds like you or someone fabulous that you know, hit us up!

What We’re Looking For

A (fantastically cool and fun) person that can provide the following:

1.  10-15 hours per week learning about the running of the studio by aiding in various studio tasks, including but not limited to:

Client relations

Studio post-processing of pictures (learning Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, uploading to galleries, preparing portraits for delivery, etc )

Marketing relations

Light clerical work if need be (packaging of portraits to mail, helping with client files, helping with phones and schedules, make Jenny a little more sane–if possible)

Blog editing, brainstorming meetings, contributing with ideas and hands, etc.

Anything else that comes up– in any given week we can need blog help, an event figured out, and three wedding timelines finalized–we need someone who can just jump in where needed…happily!

2.  Assisting at shoots and possibly 3rd or 4th shooting them

We don’t want to give the wrong impression–this is a STUDIO internship–therefore while there are photography opportunities and needs, this is not the only focus, it takes many hands to make this operation work, on many levels

Having said that, this is what photography assisting entails:

Assisting at weddings (you would be paid for these events)

Possibly attending as a 3rd or 4th shooter if needed

If you’re good at this, who knows how much we’d ask you to do!

So a little bit of photography experience is welcome and will be utilized, but if you’re dreaming of coming over and becoming our next KB, we’re not really advertising for that (and come on, there’s only one KB!)

3.  Being a part of the team

We are so team oriented over here that a lot of times our roles blur when the greater good needs something.  We all work together and we all adore each other, so this is imperative.  We can’t advertise for every little thing we might need, but we hope that the person who fits in over here will be the sort that is interested in being on our team.

What You Get Out of This

While this position is unpaid, you get perks!  We swear!

1.  Shadowing Kim Jarman (and maybe KB if she likes you, too)

KJ is more than willing to allow our intern to shadow her, and learn from her on any kind of shoot she goes on, if you’d like to.  Interning is a learning experience, and we’re happy to teach.

2.  Learn the photography business

A lot of people think that running a successful photography business would be about taking the best pictures, and that is only a small part of the machine behind the name.  You will gain experience in running a studio and see just what exactly goes into this outfit.  (A lot of craziness, we warn you!)

3.  Glowing recommendations and a resume piece

Of course our goal is to grow you into your next role–and we will do everything possible to do that.  We will always support anyone that works with us and does a great job, utilizing any resource any of us has for your benefit and success.

4.  Extended JennyP time

Dude, this might not always be a perk but I’ll try!  Chances are the majority of your time and communication will be with me, so let’s be BFF.  Please.  I’ll take you to lunch and show you the t-shirt guy I flirt with down the street.  Promise.

5.  The What If

We had no idea this time last year that we’d have associates, we had no idea we’d be growing so quickly, and we had no idea we’d be advertising for more help today:  so who knows where this will go.  We take the well-being of our team seriously and we believe in opportunity and anything we are able to do for this group, we will do it over and over again.  We’re asking someone to join the cause, if you will, and move us forward, with the promise that any way we can move you forward to your goals, we will do our very best to make that happen!

So…..now that you’ve read the fine print, please send your resumes to:  Jenny@kimberlyjarman.com

Tips to Getting Past the Jenny Screening:

I’m the one seeing your resume first, so here’s what I like to see:

Spelling that is correct and recognizable and in English

Showing that you actually read the internship description

Spellcheck

Personality (I like jokes…that are funny.  It’s a fine line.)

Words spelled correctly

Experience that is remotely what we’re looking for (although I do believe if you’re smart, you can learn!)

Did I mention the spelling?

xoxoxoxo

Introducing: A Day To Cherish!

Oh how we love event coordinators!!!!  One of our absolute favorite companies to work with on any event, or even if we just get to hang out with them with no event in sight, is A Day To Cherish.  Owned and operated by the amazing Aleasha Shelton and her team of (gorgeous) gaggle of ladies, you should definitely get to know this company.  They are professional, talented, and know exactly what they’re doing.   And besides ALL of that, they are our dear friends and people we are so proud to know and spend time and business with!   Check out Aleasha’s answers to our Vendor Questionnaire and check out the phenomenal pictures we were lucky enough to take of them at our studio recently!  We love you girlies, thank you for being who you are and doing what you do!

How did you come up with your company name?

I wanted the name to express the mission we have for each and every wedding; to make it a day they can cherish forever

What is your signature dance move?

I avoid the dance floor like I avoid tulle and puffy sleeves

If your life became a biography, what would the title be?

Are we speaking the same language? The day to day of A Day to Cherish.

If you were a TV show character, who would you be?

Charlotte from Sex and the City, a hopeless romantic who loves my décor polished just right.

What is your ring tone/caller tune, and what does it say about you?

A cheerful little melody! I used to have a wedding song for a ring tone, but that got old after the first few years.

In Vegas, you’re most likely to be the one…..?

At a show, or a great restaurant

At the end of the day the most important thing in life is:

Faith, my husband, and family

Your favorite song in high school was…?

Savage Garden, Truly, Madly, Deeply

Is your zodiac sign correct about you?  What is it and why?

For the most part, I am a virgo = modest, diligent, analytical, fussy, a worrier, and a perfectionist. Virgos make natural critics and their practical analytical abilities are second to none.

They are good at separating the good from the bad. They are clean freaks but have a messy closet somewhere!

At Barnes and Noble, what section are we most likely to find you?

Cooking, design or travel

If you were to win the lottery, what would your charity of choice be and why?

A Faith-based local organization or international small business aid for women

If your team were a band, what would everyone play and what would your music style be?

Jessica would be the outgoing lead singer,

Aleasha would play the guitar – lots of solos,

Cara would be in the back, keeping time with the drums,

and Stephanie could fill in what was needed for each song, piano, sax, whatever we need, she plays!

We would jam out to a girly pop style with a little hip hop flare.

What are your favorite kind of sneakers, and why?

I hate sneakers, that means I am working out or doing some kind of labor.

If your entire team were stuck on an island for a year, how would each of you respond?

Aleasha would pout and then make a list of survival techniques to implement,

Cara would immediately begin a search for food or anything to make into food,

Stephanie would build a boat from ‘scratch’,

and Jessica would begin to fashion branches and leaves into the most fashionable outfits possible, or she would just layout.

Would anyone be sacrificed?

No way!

Girl Hot Versus Guy Hot

I have this friend, this darling, amazing, smart woman friend, who cannot figure out why she NEVER gets hit on when we go out, and why men don’t go for her the way they go for others….but I do know why and I’ve been trying to explain it to her, and I figured I’d explain it here too!   It’s because when it comes to initial, physical attraction (yes, I realize there are many reasons why you love someone, but on that first meeting, you’re using your eyes) what girls think is attractive  is very, very different than what guys find hot!  Now, some of you might be thinking, “Sure, guys like skimpy clothes and hot bodies.”  Well, true, but that’s not what I’m talking about, really.  I’m talking about the general difference between what a man is drawn to as opposed to a woman.  And let’s not get anti-feminist here, of course I think everyone should dress however makes them feel good, BUT, if you’re like my sweet, clueless friend, then you might like these tips!

Hair

Ok, men like pretty, confident women.  It doesn’t matter how long or short or curly or straight your hair is, if it looks good on you, this is what is attractive.  Yet, there are a few things you should keep in mind if you’re heading out on a first date and really want to impress.  Girls think updos and various “styles” are so cute, fun, elegant and pretty.  I love to twist my hair up, wrap it in a side bun with a big flower and feel dressy!  And you know what my boyfriend says after I do this?   Nothing.  On the other hand, if I wash my hair, blow dry it and leave it down, he always, always makes comments on how pretty it is and touches it constantly.  Does he see the effort of my trendy, perfectly teased updo with a sparkly, bowed headband nestled in just perfectly?  No, he likes my hair first thing in the morning hanging down in no special fashion.

Men like hair that looks touchable, soft, and low-maintenance.  Think of it this way:  what would you think, as a man, if you went on a first date with a woman in some intricate, sprayed, just-so hairdo with glittery hair baubles?  You’d think for the rest of your life you’re going to be waiting on this woman’s hair to be done before leaving the house.  Appearing high-maintenance, even just in the hair, is never going to appeal to the male species.  Is that hair sending the message that later if he wants to head out to the beach in Jeep, you’re going to be up for that?   Girl hot- uber-cool updos straight out of fashion magazines.  Guy hot- touchable, easy, low-maintenance ‘dos.

So, for lunch with the girls or a girls’ night out, rock those updos!  Pull out all the accessories and glam it up all you want.  Date night with the hubby?  Leave it down and leave it alone.  He likes you natural and something he can touch.

Girl-hot= Keira Knightley’s Oscar updo

Guy-hot= Keira Knightley tousled bed-head

Keira is always lovely, but much more accessible on the right

Knowing When to Dress Up

Ok.  This gets SO tricky for my girlfriend who cannot figure her lack of appeal to men!   She thinks of everything as something to really dress up for!  If we’re going out on Saturday night I usually have on favorite jeans, a cute top and a funky watch.  My friend, on the other hand, is going to be wearing the latest,  fashion top, pencil-thin brand-name jeans, sky-high heels, five bangle bracelets, the cutest necklace in the world, chandelier earrings, and perfect lipstick.  And…..I’m going to be hit on all night while she fumes.   Why is this happening people?  Because a Saturday night out at random clubs and bars or concerts are not events to dress up for like that!  Would you approach a girl with that much armor on?  The shoes, the clothes, the jewelry, the makeup-this stuff is intimidating!  It screams, “HIGH MAINTENANCE!”  No guy is going to look at all that and think, “Yep, that girl looks like fun.”  She doesn’t look fun, she looks like she’s on the prowl and kind of insecure, honestly.

So having said that, is there a never a time to dress up in all your favorite, glammy stuff and really do it up?  Of course there is!  Once again, this is girl-hot.  Save this stuff for the people that will appreciate it-your girlfriends!  Also, save it for times when it really is a dress-up affair.  A friend’s birthday dinner at a nice restaurant, an evening event for work, or your own birthday!  Otherwise, I’m sorry, but there isn’t much need for that kind of high-voltage look.  Obviously I’m generalizing here, but in my experience, this look just doesn’t appeal to men on anyone besides Fergie, and, well…I bet they wouldn’t approach her either.  They’d be WAY too scared!  (As would I, I mean, it’s Fergie!) And when your man takes you out to a fancy anniversary dinner, or you’re attending a black tie wedding, think of his face then, when he sees his pretty girl all dolled up for the ball.  Prom is only once a year, no matter how old you are.  There’s a time and a place, a time and a place.

Girl-hot= Taylor Swift’s CMA dress

Guy-hot= Taylor Swift’s simple sundress and cowboy boots

Yep, both pretty, but the girl on the right is being asked out tonight

Styles

I have this super cute top on right now and Kim has complimented me three times on it.  It’s cotton, has black straps, an almost triangle-shape top portion, wide black band around the middle, and then flares out into a flowy, babydoll-esque style hitting right below my hips.  I love this shirt.  Kim loves this shirt.  My little sister loves this shirt.  Every boyfriend I’ve ever had does not love this shirt.  I have an ex that actually used to hide it and ask me to please not wear my “maternity clothes”.  Yeah, he called it that.  It’s not a maternity top!  It’s an expensive boutique shirt I get complimented on constantly! ….by women.  Guys just don’t like babydoll, flowy styles very much, regardless of how trendy they might be.  Apparently they also equate this look with maternity wear!

I have learned that if my goal is to look hot to my significant other, then I leave the billowy fashions in the closet.  If I’m going out with my girlfriends, I pull them out and accessorize!   (Anti-feminism disclaimer, if I want to wear it, I wear it, it’s not his choice what I want to put on my body, but you get what I’m saying, right?)   My wonderful friend that we’ve been discussing makes this mistake ALL the time!  She will be telling me she wants to meet someone at some event we’re going to, and then shows up in some flowy, silky, off-the-shoulder ,caftan style top that I know is hanging in store windows everywhere, but I also know is about as appealing to a straight man as a muumuu is!  Most men have no idea what is “in” right now, they just know when you look good. Men enjoy the female form, and they want to see it.  This doesn’t mean if you are trying to dress up for your husband today you need a skintight, see-through number.  It means that if you’re holding up two dresses and one is babydoll-waisted and one requires Spanx, break out the Spanx, lady.

Girl-hot= Nicole Richie’s hippie-boho dresses

Guy-hot= Jennifer Aniston’s fitted weekend jeans.

I love Nicole’s dress, as my brother is drooling over Jennifer

Makeup

This one is a no-brainer.  No guy out there prefers a woman in full-faced, piled on, unable to wash off makeup.  No guy is going to look at your silver eyeshadow, red lipstick, and sparkly bronzer and think you look best that way.  You can’t kiss a mouth in full lipstick.  You can’t let a woman in tons of bronzer near your white shirt.  You cannot stop staring at someone’s eyebrows when they’re drawn on.  You have to think of this from his point of view.  Yes, the MAC counter girls are going to tell you that everyone is wearing blue eyeshadow right now, and that it looks best with dark, cherry lipstick and highlighter on your cheekbones.  But, that girl standing next to you in Bare Minerals and mascara is talking to the guy you like.  All night.  She looks real!  He isn’t thinking that for the next five years of dating her she’s going to hold him up with makeup application and freak out at the idea of getting in a swimming pool.  Recently, in Las Vegas, the darling boyfriend actually said to me, after I got into my teeny-tiny gold dress and teased my hair up in Vegas-style, “Don’t wear any makeup.”  Well, that was laughable, I mean the one place you need the costume-face is Las Vegas, but I heard his sentiment.  He really does like my face naked (Lord help the poor man).  His exact words were, “You look like you, and I like you.”  He’s not the minority, ladies.

And let me explain something: a lot of men don’t realize that the “no makeup” look they think they like, actually includes makeup and some effort.  They don’t understand the subtleties of sheer foundation, perfect blush, mascara, and some lip gloss.  They just know that you look pretty. What they DO understand, though, is the chick wearing pounds of caked on goop is going to be a lot of work.

So again, when it’s a girls’ night, a bachelorette party, or Las Vegas Strip night, put everything in your makeup case on your face.  Otherwise, do you really need liquid eyeliner to pick up a pair of jeans at the mall?  Do you really think, as you head out on a first date, that he can’t see the amount of war paint on your face?  Makeup, in general, is supposed to give the illusion of natural beauty, it’s created to enhance, not cover up.  And while many men and women alike love a great red lip, it’s not something you bust out every single night.  Unless you’re Gwen Stefani.

Girl-hot= any MAC ad

Guy-hot= any Colbie Caillat video

Come on, you cannot hang with the chick on the left, no matter how amazing those fake lashes!

Moral of my article:

Take it easy, ladies, if you’re dressing to impress these men.  They like you closest to your natural form (or what they think is your natural form-notice I didn’t say to stop shaving, waxing, buying Spanx, or coloring your hair).  When you’re out with the girls, you can impress them with all your latest styles and hairdos, they will appreciate it and recognize the effort!  But when you’re out with your man, or out to meet your potential man, think of the psychology behind what you’re making yourself look like.  Trying too hard never looks good, and overdone always smells like desperation.  You, in your stripped self, is beautiful and that guy is SO lucky to meet you.  Touch up your face, comb your hair, toss on those jeans that make your butt look amazing, and call it a night. Trust me in this advice, I don’t hurt in the good men department! *wink*

And my big brother Michael (33) is sitting here with me and read through this and said, “This is true. It’s all true. You’re right.” And he agreed on all the pictures (I wanted to just double check). Telling you ladies, this is insider info!

Heidi @ idieh | design - Well, I can sympathize with your friend, so I’ll try to re-evaluate these areas of my life. 😉 You are fabulous, Jenny P.

Health Craze Obsessions

I’m turning over a new leaf lately, and I’m focusing on my health and creating a better lifestyle for myself, and the idea of liking my body in certain outfits more doesn’t hurt either.  But, as we all know, it’s hard to make those changes!  If you haven’t been going to the gym regularly, it’s not easy to make that a new habit!  If you aren’t used to eating food that’s less in calories and sugar, it’s not second nature to curb those sweets and candy cravings!   So while it’s not the easiest thing to do, some little pieces of wonderful have been helping me make that transition with more ease and less resistance.   I thought I should share with everyone the few little items that I’ve been leaning on and LOVING in this new quest to a healthier, fitter Kim.

Subway Breakfast Sandwiches

Who knew Subway made breakfast?!  I have become addicted to the Black Forest ham, cheese, and egg sandwich for my morning meal!  It’s an English muffin, Black Forest ham, cheese, an egg white, and all the veggies I want to pile on top, for 160 calories!   Yes, you heard that right, 160 calories.  And it’s delicious!  I’m getting my vegetables in the morning, a bite to eat before working out, and I don’t feel like I’m sacrificing any taste.  Thank you, Subway, for making my morning change a pleasant one, and thank you darling sister, Jamie, for getting me hooked!

Starbucks Cafe Americano

Everyone wants coffee in the morning, we all stop at Starbucks, and this can add tons of calories to your day if you’re not careful, so I have found a delicious cup of wake-up here to solve that problem!  I have been ordering an Iced (though you can get it hot) Venti 4 Shot Cafe Americano with no water and very little skim milk (the milk adds the calories), and it only racks in at 80 calories!  It tastes yummy and even though I’m allergic to caffeine and get it decaf, you can get your caffeine fix here too!   Thank you, Starbucks, for not taking away my morning coffee, and thank you (again) amazing sister, Jamie, for getting me hooked (again)!

Elliptical Machines

Sure, elliptical machines are not some new invention, but they are making my workouts something I can enjoy, as opposed to something I dread.  Here’s why:  I get a total body workout without localized pain afterward and I can listen to an audio book the entire time and feel like I’m not only helping my body, but I am helping my mind too!  I have a two-year-old, a business, a husband, friends, events, and about 14 million other things on my to-do list, the last thing I have time for is to sit down and read a book, so the fact that I can do this while I’m working out is amazing!

I hope this little bit of information helps someone else find some healthy choices that they like too!  Send me some positive vibes, I’m working hard to get healthy!
