Keep Calm and Shoot On | Questions and Answers with Kimberly

KEEP CALM AND SHOOT ON

Awhile back I asked Facebook land to tell me what they would like me to blog about. One of the questions I got was, “Does a photographer ever relax in life without constantly shooting life memories?” (Thanks Aleasha Shelton!!). I thought this was a great question and wanted to share a little about my life being a photographer and what that means as far as constantly shooting.

Every photographer is different and handles life differently, so I can’t answer this question for everyone; however, I can talk about me!

Have you ever heard the phrase “The Cobbler’s children have no shoes.”? There is a reason that phrase came to be because the cobbler was so busy working for everyone else that he didn’t have time to make shoes for his children. Sadly, in many ways this is actually my life. I wish I could say that I am the perfect photographer and every event that we have in my family, I pull out my great camera and capture life perfectly so that we have these amazing memories to look back on; magazine quality pictures that will forever tell a story of my family and our life together. However, if you ask anyone in my family they will tell you that Kim NEVER has her camera and if she does they NEVER see the pictures.

Sadly it’s true; I LOVE photography and actually constantly take pictures with my iPhone and capture life that way, but pulling out the BIG camera means that I have to work; I have to carry all the heavy gear with my multiple lenses, I have to download the pictures, edit the pictures, and then get images to friends and family. Since I do that already ALL the time for my clients, it never seems to actually happen personally. My clients become priority and my amazing pictures of my family sit on my computer and seldom get touched. It’s sad isn’t it:(

Thankfully Steve Jobs invented a thing called an iPhone. It’s a revolutionary tool that changed my life so that, while I don’t have Professional pictures of our life events, I do have a TON of pictures of my life all captured on the camera phone of my iPhone! I’m a true iPhone believer. With my iPhone I don’t feel as though it’s work because it’s instant gratification and I can easily share pictures and back them up. I can edit while sitting on my couch and do some fun things. For those of you who would love to know a great iPhone editor, look up PicTapGo and have SOOO much fun. This is the best picture editing app out there. It’s made taking pictures fun for me again and not necessarily a chore, which is what capturing life with a camera should actually be all about.

So, to answer Alicia’s question, I say “YES”. I do relax without constantly shooting memories. For my clients, I work hard and get them amazing images to cherish for life; I use my big gear, I edit, I share. With my family, to make it “relaxing” I have fun with my little tiny camera in my pocket (my iPhone) and I have a good time capturing memories that way. It’s good to take a break and realize when you need to put work aside and just enjoy life. Balance is huge in life in general, and especially when you own your own business and have a family. I don’t feel guilty about not pulling out my big camera all the time because I need that separation, but i’m thankful that I have a tool that still allows me to capture great memories and have a little fun while doing it. I love the saying, “Keep Calm and Shoot On”; it applies to my business and my life in regards to photography!

P.S. I am a true believer in still getting amazing professional pictures of my family and when I need that to happen I hire a professional photographer to do that, just like you all. There are times a professional needs to capture life and get those important moments and an iPhone won’t do. I’m thankful for the photographers in my life who have captured my family and given me those amazing pictures that I will cherish forever. I get to stand back and let someone else do the work for me, and it feels nice.

kimberlyjarman - It’s so true Michelle. It’s a heavy beast and you have to bring all your lenses:):) I like small handy cameras for personal things:)

Michelle Koechle - I’m in the same boat! I get so tired of the workflow process that I rarely bring my MIII with me anywhere. Plus, it’s so heavy!

Wedding at the Montelucia Resort & Spa | AMBER + ANDREW

Montelucia Resort & Spa Wedding Photography Scottsdale Wedding Photographer

This wedding, at the the Montelucia Resort & Spa, in Scottsdale, Arizona, was beyond beautiful and absolutly stunning.

Amber and Andrew are both from a small town in North Dakota and had almost always known of each other, but never spent any significant amount of time together. However, that changed, when one day, on Facebook, Andrew sent Amber a message asking her for her number. It wasn’t too long after that they found themselves talking to each other every day. Amber was 5 hours away at college at the time, but after she went home one weekend to visit, they were inseparable after that!

Three years later, Amber & Andrew, now joined by their sweet son Easton , were married at the Montelucia Resort & Spa in a truly gorgeous, lavish, and over-the-top wedding. While the wedding was stunning and breathtaking, they celebrated the day in a very intimate fashion – surrounded by only 30 or so guests.

It was wonderful to get to know them throughout the day and see how much they truly love one another. After Andrew opened his gift from Amber, he just shook his head in unbelief and  said “she is truly the most thoughtful person I know, I can’t believe I get to marry her.” It was so clear that Amber is the woman of his dreams! The whole day was filled with tears of joy. The couple chose to do a first look and we love the images we got during this time.

Their ceremony had all the guests crying, from the moment little Easton was pulled down the aisle in a wagon, to when Amber & Andrew recited their specially-written vows to each other. Their reception was no different, there were so many tears of joy as the couple danced their first song together as husband and wife. Their reception room was absolutely breathtaking – Cara from A Day to Cherish did a great job! The rest of the night was filled with delicious food (dinner, cheesecake, cake pops, wedding cake, and even a mid-reception snack!), tons of dancing, so many memorable moments for such a special couple

BLOG APOLOGY

BLOGAPOLOGY It seems as though every year I have to take time to apologize for the lack of blogging. This last year I was on a great start with the blog; we were on top of all of our weddings, portrait sessions, and every once in awhile I threw in a little something else. Then the summer hit, and while my wonderful office assistant Elise was creating blog posts and had them all ready for me to post, I never posted them. Bad Kim, Bad Kim.

I know a blog is no good unless it has content on it and this year I plan to give you all content. More than just pretty pictures, but some actual content. We have a plan and i’m hoping you will all like it.

We will be posting a little bit of everything for all those who visit. Some for our clients, some for photographers, some for fans, and some for the random stopper by. We hope you like all that we have up our sleeves and we’d love to hear feedback. If there is anything specific you’d like to hear about don’t hesitate to ask.

Some of the things you should plan on seeing include:

  • Business is the key – For Photographers
  • How to put together a great wedding and get great photo’s
  • Newborns – When to schedule a session and what to expect
  • See what some of our past wedding couples are up to now that their wedding is over
  • Amazing pictures from all of our sessions
  • Plus so much more!

Also, because I slacked on posting so many good sessions and portraits from this last year, get ready to see those. They are ready to go and will be viewable soon!

2014 is going to be a good year and we want you to come back and visit us often.

Here is to some blog love! Cheers!!!

2013 is Gone… Ring in the new year!

HappyNewYear2013HEADER

Looking back at 2013 is a blur. It went by so fast and I’m not really sure if I’m ok with that. It seems that every year goes by faster and faster; does that happen with age? Does it get worse or better? I’m dying to know… or wait, don’t tell me, I think I’d rather just let it happen.  No need for stress right?

Now that 2013 is gone it’s time to ring in the new year and start a great 2014!

THE STUDIO

The studio is doing amazing. I am so blessed with my team and so thankful to call them friends. I have 3 amazing associates (Emily, Diana, and Elise), a PHENOMENAL Office assistant ++ (Elise),  2 great second shooters (Jen & Rachel), and 2 interns (Kayla & Lauren). Our studio had 22 weddings and 45 plus portrait sessions in 2013. We have had such a great time with our clients and love getting to meet new people and continue taking pictures for clients who have been with us for awhile.

2013 brought me to some crazy awesome places to photograph, including shooting at a dairy farm 3 times, San Diego, Newport Beach, some wonderful private homes, and some phenomenal resorts. We were able to photograph weddings, newborns, children, families, high school seniors, vendor friends, and even some commercial work for a local golf course. I love where my job takes me!

2014 will not disappoint as we already have 14 weddings on the book, just for the spring alone. We’ve had to turn down weddings because we just don’t have enough man power so, we are starting to train some new assistants, 2nd shooters, and associates to help with the growth of our company.

We are so excited for all of the amazing weddings coming up and super excited to see who will be our clients in the fall!!

Some things to look out for 2014:

• More blogging (I’ve been horrible at blogging this year and I plan to keep up with it more)

• More information on True Art Sessions and why you want to make sure you sign up for one!

• More information on our mini sessions and how these are perfect for a few quick updated pictures a few times a year.

• Tips for Photographers

• Tips for Clients

• Hear from our past clients and what they are doing now that their wedding is over.

• BABIES….. 2 of our photographers (one of those photographers being me) are having a baby this year! And it seems like everyone we know is having a baby… babies everywhere! We are all excited.

• AMAZING and over the top weddings.

PERSONAL

Personally 2013 was great, but a little crazy as well. I now have a 5 year old who is amazing and wonderful and keeps me busy! Being a full time business owner and full time mom can wear a person out. Kailee, our 5 year old daughter has jumped head first into the world of Triathlons. She trains with a team 3 times a week (because she wants to, we are not forcing type parents) and LOVES the interaction with her coaches and team mates. She is a GREAT swimmer and can now ride a bike for over 2 miles without stopping and loves to run. She has completed 2 small triathlons and did well in both! With all my running around taking her to practices and fitting in portrait shoots, clients meetings, and weddings, my life seems to be a blur!

In August we found out that we are pregnant!! We had been trying to add to our family for 3 years and nothing was working. We were starting to look into adoption and foster care when BAM…. everything changed. In May we are expecting a little boy to enter into our world and change things once again! It was actually perfect timing because I have some AMAZING weddings this spring and will be able to photograph them all, then will take off this summer to spend time with our newest bundle (while it’s too hot here in AZ to do anything), and then will jump back into wedding and portraits during the fall. Very thankful for this little guy and how he will add so much to our family!

My husband is a CPA for a firm in Phoenix, Price Kong & Company. He is wonderful at what he does and LOVES numbers. I’m thankful to have him in my life and help me make some great decisions along the way in business. He is such a support to what I do and i’m very thankful for him. He completed 3 half marathons this year and 1 full marathon and is gearing up for more. He’s an addicted runner and i’m kinda jealous that he can do it so well!!

As we enter into 2014 I’m excited to see what this year entails. I’m excited to see growth happen in my business and in my personal life. We must have a balance in order to survive and i’m thankful that i’m somewhat learning how to do that.

We can’t wait to work with you and your families. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you and how we can serve you better. We LOVE what we do and couldn’t make it happen without our clients, friends, and family.

Here is to a great 2014 for all!! Cheers!!
