Dressing For the Life We Want {Fashion Frenzy Friday’s with JennyP}

Jenny here again with your Fashion Frenzy Friday post.

Your clothes say SO much about you, things you don’t even realize they’re saying, and I think I’m taking note of mine this week.

Let’s look at some examples I saw recently:  woman in parking lot wearing stretched out red sweater, faded jeans, hair in messy ponytail, tennis shoes, and a huge pink puffy diaper bag on one arm.  We don’t need an analyst, this woman is a mom!  Probably a tired mom whose baby is still waking up all night and the fact that she even got her pants on correctly is a testament to her amazingness, so hat’s off to you my love!       Example 2:  Girl running to her car at the gas station;  jeans, U of A t-shirt, sunglasses, flip flops, and messenger bag on her arm.  I’m guessing student when I look at her.  The relaxed clothes, the flip flops, and the messenger bag are sending me messages without even consciously thinking about what I’m receiving from her.

Now let’s talk about the woman who inspired my post today—age was truly unknowable, I’m guessing an amazing looking 35-40, dark skinny jeans, ballet flats, white perfectly fitted t-shirt, long pink scarf loose around her neck and long gray cardigan.  I wanted to BE this woman she looked so cute!  Upon telling her I loved her scarf, I find out she is….a police officer off-duty!  Excuse me?  I didn’t get that vibe at all!  I figured she was a retail manager, something in writing, or maybe even a lady who lunches?!  I was looking at her adorable outfit and could not see that transforming into the male-structured garb of a police uniform!  So this got me thinking, what do my clothes vibe out about me?

Today I’m wearing black leggings, a tight gray and black striped sweater dress, knee-high black boots, and a wide black belt around my middle.  This isn’t because I’m a fashionista at all times, it’s because all of my jeans are in the laundry!  I probably look a little high-maintenance today, someone who is constantly dressing up and putting on lip gloss…which I am so NOT!  But….I like this secret identity dressing!  If I want to appear like a European transport model tomorrow, I’m going to download Kate Moss’ pictures and start copying!  If I want to get a student discount at the movies tomorrow, I’m busting out my ASU (Go Devils!) sweatshirt and scrubbing off this makeup!  My persona can change with my outfit, much like the revered and idolized Madonna, and I think I’m going to start working that power!

What do your clothes say about you?  Everyone should take a few moments to think about this.  If you’re in a high-powered job, or want to be, you should take a long look in the mirror.  Are your shoes scuffed up?  Is your collar wrinkled?  Is your white shirt looking as crisp as it can?  If you’re a business owner at a networking meeting, do you look believable?  If you’re in your comfy jeans and you air-dried your hair today, people might not take your business ideas, no matter how amazing, very seriously!   It might sound a little shallow, but if you think about it, your clothes are an extension of your personality and life.  Heidi Klum dresses like a supermodel, well, because she is one!  If you’re a real estate agent, why are you dressing like you operate a daycare?  Non-verbal communication is like 80% of what people get from you, this includes appearance.  So let’s all pull out the full-length mirror and start dressing the way we want people to view us!  This isn’t to say you shouldn’t be yourself, just make sure you’re being your BEST self when you’re putting on those clothes.  They’re not just to avoid public indecency!
